Sorority History

FOUR STRONG LATINAS FOUNDED SLU...
Through mutual courage, support, respect and love, our impenetrable bond of sisterhood unites Hermanas of many diverse backgrounds to work towards our common Goals and Ideals.
Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. was founded on December 1, 1987 at
Binghamton University by four trailblazing Latina women.
Our Founding Mothers Cynthia Santiago, Adriana Zamora, Carmen Ibeth Garcia-Quiñones, and
Carol Elizabeth Torres sought to create an organization that would not only serve as a voice for
women in an academic setting, but would also provide sincere sisterhood and unconditional support
while actively promoting academic achievement, service to the community, and cultural enrichment.
Decades later, the organization has chapters at over 50 top colleges and universities, as well as graduate/professional membership that encompasses major cities in the U.S. The chapters have
been recognized on their campuses and have won numerous awards such as MGC Chapter of the Year,
Highest Academic GPA Achievement, Outstanding Program of the Year and many others.

Though we are Latina based, Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. is not Latina-exclusive, and takes pride in serving as a non-discriminatory organization made up of women from over 90 different nationalities, all cultures, creeds, disabilities, political beliefs, and sexual preferences.
