LUMINOUS LAMBDA HISTORY

In 1993, a group of women on the New Brunswick campus were seeking an organization for women that would allow them to create a support network on campus, as well as an opportunity to meet other women of color who might share their experiences. This was a challenging time for students of color to find spaces of visibility on such a large college campus. They felt this was important to their personal development, and after meeting the Hermanas of the Kappa Chapter (Princeton University), they knew Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. was the right choice.

On November 11, 1995 the Lambda Chapter was established by four determined women.

Hermana Alexandra Marin

Since then the Hermanas of Lambda Chapter have been contributors of their time and talents to various organizations in the Rutgers Community.

The Hermanas have been part of numerous student organizations including, but not limited to, Latin American Womyns Organization, Multicultural Greek Council, Casa Boriqua, West Indian Student Organization, Rutgers Union Estudiantil Puertoriquena, Sociedad Estudiantil Dominicana, Central and South American Alliance,  and the Latino Student Council. Leading by example, Lambda Chapter Hermanas, past and present, strive to epitomize academic excellence, leadership, community service, cultural awareness, and Hermandad.

It's the Red, Black, Silver, and Gold, Sigma Lambda is all we know!
